My name is Karen Lucas. I have lived most of my life in Thorndale. I grew up here (my parents are Nancy & Roy Urquhart - Roy's Garage). I lived in London for 8 years, but when my husband, Brian and I were starting a family, we wanted to move to Thorndale as this is the best place to grow up! (I may be biased).
I have my H.B.A from the Ivey School of business. After working as a financial controller for 18 years, the business that I worked for had to close due to the passing of the owner in 2010. At that point, I decided to open my own business to be more flexible for my family (one of my son's had started having seizures and was then diagnosed with Epilepsy) and lessen the stress level in my life. It was a huge decision for me, but I was lucky enough to get my first client the same week that I opened my business. It has been almost 7 years now and my business continues to grow.
My many years as a controller have made me very efficient and given me a keen eye for details. My small town roots make me honest, hard working and reliable, my dad owns his own business and I worked for my Uncle that ran his own business in Thorndale as well. I am proud to be another member of our family to help the Thorndale community continue to grow and thrive.
I provide a full range of bookkeeping services for small business. I am flexible and can do as much or as little as you require.
I do most of my work from my home office in Thorndale.

One of the best stories I have from my business is from back in 2011. My son had been having seizures for over 2 years and they were becoming more severe. Each time we went to the ER, they would tell us that it was not normal, but they weren't going to send him for tests. In Oct 2011, I received an email from the Epilepsy Support Centre in London (I did not know they existed at that point) because they needed someone to look after their books. I went in to interview for the position and I mentioned about Devan. With their help, Devan had a neurology appointment in 2 weeks and was diagnosed

Put all your income tax receipts, such as your medical receipts, charity receipts , receipts for children's activities, T4 slips, and Notice of Assessment into a single folder. When you get such a receipt, it only takes a few seconds to slip it into the folder. And when it’s time to do your income tax, all the receipts you need are in one place.
Whenever you get a receipt that you are going to keep and use for tax purposes, look at it before you file it. If the date is hard to read, write the date on the receipt. In many cases, (such as medical and business receipts) you’ll need the date when you’re entering the receipt data, and taking a second or two to make sure the date is legible now will save lots of squinting and guessing later.
If you have a rental property, set up and use a separate folder for all the receipts pertinent to that property. Then you won’t have to bother sorting through all your receipts to separate your rental property receipts from your personal receipts at tax time.
It helps to have your tax return done by a professional to make sure that you are maximizing your return! But remember, there are lots of tax preparers out there. Make sure that you use someone that knows what they are doing and will get you that maximum
Save those receipts for medical expenses for you, your spouse and your children (Prescriptions, Eye Exams, Glasses, Hearing Aids, Medical Insurance, Chiropractic Costs, Massage Therapy Costs, Dental Work, and more). Non-reimbursed medical expenses can be claimed as a non-refundable tax credit when you accumulate enough in a one year period.
Be sure to hold on to any returns and related receipts you may need for 6 years following the end of the tax year, because you never know if you will end up being audited (but let’s hope you won't)..
